There’s no doubt that diets are the worst things in the world. No one likes dieting, and if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, they usually end up making you feel tired, irritable, and ridiculously hangry. If you haven’t heard it before, you’re about to hear it now: to lose weight though eating habits, you shouldn’t be dieting, but rather making healthy foods a part of your lifestyle. Wouldn’t we all like to have a personal chef who could just whip up something that tastes amazing but consists of a balanced amount of proteins, fats, carbs, and sugars? It’s hard to shake the thought that if we just had someone to outline exactly what it was we had to eat to lose weight (and then make it for us), the whole eating healthy thing wouldn’t be so tough.

So yes, we understand that eating well should be a lifestyle, but sometimes that wedding or island vacation that’s coming up quickly, just won’t wait for that change in lifestyle. Though it’s not truly effective long-term, diets are sometimes necessities. In order for your diet to be a success however, you have to avoid some of the most commonly made mistakes.

Not working out

Abs are indeed made in the kitchen, but you have to workout to give your weight loss that little extra boost. You can find a gym just about anywhere. There are even gyms near Grand Central in the middle of New York City where you can find classes and personal training. Even if you don’t want to go to a gym, you can always lace up your shoes and go for a walk or a run around your neighborhood. There’s no excuse for skipping the workout part of the weight loss journey altogether.

Skipping breakfast

You might think that drinking a cup of coffee and calling that breakfast is going to save you 400 calories for the day. Sure, you’re saving the calories for a little bit, but try skipping breakfast and then not being absolutely starving until lunchtime. Eating a hearty breakfast actually kick starts your metabolism and helps your body burn calories throughout the day. Skipping breakfast will leave you hungry and more apt to snack. Snacking can actually add up to more calories than you would have consumer if you had just eaten breakfast. If you pack your breakfast with protein and fiber, you can actually curb your appetite until lunchtime and therefore avoid snacking altogether.

Using your calories on drinks

If you don’t do your research, you might not be aware of how many calories can actually be packed into a small liquid drink. You know that sodas are bad for you because of the amount of sugar they have in them, but did you know that a tall can of raspberry Arizona iced tea has 270 calories in it; or that a Snapple Apple has 200 calories in one bottle? Sugary drinks do just about nothing for you, besides make you crave sugar even more. Instead, drink water and save the calories for food that’s actually going to fill you and provide your body with the necessary nutrients.

Not considering portions

It’s important that when you read food labels you read how many servings are in a package. A bag of chips that says 100 calories per serving might not sound too bad, but if the bag contains 8 servings, you’re going to want to grab a handful and hide the bag. The serving size might be low in calorie, but it’s important to then pay attention to how many servings you’re actually eating! The same goes for actual meals. When you’re eating out, a salad might look like the best choice, but it can be packed with fatty dressing and other additions. Try eating half of your meal out and taking the rest home for lunch the next day.
